A €600,000 Picasso painting, Still Life with Guitar (1919), disappeared while being transported from Madrid to Granada for an exhibition at the Caja Granada Foundation. The van delivery on October 3 never arrived as expected, but the missing artwork wasn’t discovered until several days later.
Police believe the theft likely occurred during an unexplained overnight stop in Deifontes, a town near Granada, though security footage from the exhibition site showed no incident. The small gouache-and-pencil piece, owned by a private Madrid collector, was insured and last bought in 2009 for €600,000.
The case has since been taken over by Granada’s theft unit, and the foundation says it is cooperating fully with investigators. Picasso works are frequent targets of theft, with several high-profile cases reported over past decades.
