A New Frida Kahlo Museum opens in Mexico City

Museo Casa Kahlo, nicknamed Casa Roja, opened on 27 September 2025 in Mexico City’s Coyoacán, just minutes from Casa Azul. Housed in the Kahlo family’s longtime home, it offers a more intimate perspective on Frida Kahlo’s life, centring on her family ties, especially with her sister Cristina and niece Isolda, whose archives form the core of the collection.
The museum combines personal letters, restored domestic spaces, family heirlooms, and early artworks to showcase Frida’s private world. Key features include a restored kitchen mural with bird motifs, a basement retreat where she painted and wrote, and immersive displays of family correspondence.
Unlike the larger Casa Azul, which celebrates Frida as an artist, Casa Roja emphasises Frida “in flesh and bone”—her emotions, relationships, and everyday life. Supported by the family’s Fundación Kahlo, the museum also reflects their efforts to reclaim her story and legacy.
